Istria, Croatia’s truffle heartland, is world-famous for its white and black truffles, prized for their aroma and flavor. These rare fungi thrive in the karst soil of Istria’s oak and hazelnut forests, where Mediterranean climate and rich biodiversity create perfect conditions.

The most celebrated areas for truffle hunting are Motovun, with its rolling hills and oak groves; the valley along the Mirna River, known for fertile forest soil and dense vegetation; and Buzet, often called the “Truffle Capital of Istria,” where numerous family-run truffle farms operate. These regions are particularly abundant in white truffles, harvested from October to January, and black truffles, found in winter.

Istrian truffles are celebrated by local producers like Zigante, near Livade, famous for its truffle restaurant, festival, and high-quality products including truffle oils and spreads, and Karlić, a family-owned farm offering fresh truffles and artisan delicacies.

A highlight for visitors is truffle hunting tours, where participants can join guides and specially trained dogs to search for truffles. Near Motovun, Miro Tartufi is a leading operator offering hands-on experiences, teaching about seasonal harvesting, and letting guests taste freshly collected truffles.

Istrian truffles are more than a gourmet delight—they are a symbol of the region’s heritage, natural richness, and culinary prestige, attracting food enthusiasts from all over the world.
